Begin the night before23:00 · the night before everything
The night you hear of us
You hear about us at dinner.
A member mentions the first Sunday of June the way other people mention a wedding. By 23:00 you are still up, reading.
Once a year the road over the Passo del Lupo closes to traffic — for us. Sixty cars, forty-four numbered hairpins, no stopwatches. There is no prize. The co-driver calls the corners, and breakfast matters as much as the col.
You are not sure whether you want to drive it or to belong to it.
They are the same wanting.
Founded 1974 by rally navigator Piero Lanfranchi. The notation in this book is his.
04:40 · the disused Fina canopy
The day begins in the dark
Petrol and thermos steam. Cold tarmac, larch resin. The start order goes up in chalk on a slate that still carries the ghosts of every year before, and sixty cars idle in the dark while nobody hurries.
€420Two breakfasts, the roadbook, your stamps, and the group photograph — posted afterward.
Wire-bound · tulip notation · since 1974
The book you are holding
Every crew is handed the same wire-bound book at the canopy. Each corner is drawn the way Lanfranchi drew them in 1974: a dot where you are, an arrow where you go.
| Total | Partial | Tulip | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.40 | 3.40 | Fork right at the sawmill. Keep the river on your left. | |
| 11.20 | 7.80 | Hairpin 1 of 44. The co-driver breathes in. | |
| 17.85 | 6.65 | Fountain on the right. Fill nothing. Listen. |
Sunday 1 June 1997 · rain at the start
…the tulips ran in the wet and the co-drivers called from memory. Forty-one cars reached breakfast. The pages dried the way pages dry.
Nobody has ever fixed it. Nobody ever will.
Rule one, printed inside every roadbook since 1974
“Breakfast matters as much as the col.”

The climb, read aloud: forty-four painted hairpins — left, tightens; cowbells above the scree; snow poles begin; the stamp at 23, struck twice; someone stops being afraid at 31; the larches thin; sky.
Sixty engines tick.
Ettore has rung the chapel bell at the summit since 1991.Sixty engines tick underneath it. Then — breakfast.
09:30 · the fuel-stop table
The col is half the day
The café stop is written into the roadbook as a destination, not a pause. Plates arrive, corners are re-driven with hands in the air, and someone’s co-driver — it is always the co-driver — starts the story of 1997 again.
The group photograph is taken at 09:30 and posted to every crew. You will keep it longer than you keep the stamps.
